'None of Us the Same' is an outstanding book delving into the complexities of societal changes in WWI, the hardships of shattered lives, the bonds which connect & re-connect, and magical Newfoundland in its innocent isolation and beauty.
This is an enchanting book packed with action, WWI insights, a peek into a generation separated from beloveds, seeking morale high grounds as everything they new is uprooted.
Written by a man with an intriguing history of war, dodging bullets, mortars and bombs his keen knowledge of the subject gives this story a true depth.

None of Us the Same Sweet Wine of Youth Book 1 edition by Jeffrey K Walker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The stark horror of trench warfare, the pain of the disabled Vet, the struggle to deal with "shell shock", and the insidious specter of Opioid addiction.
Historical-Fiction on par with W.E.B. Griffin.
The book is a pleasure to read and a history lesson. I didn't know that Newfoundland was not part of Canada until 1949. The author knows so much about WWI and country conditions during that time in France, England, Ireland, Turkey, Newfoundland, and the United States. I recently visited the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, where they had a WWI exhibit. I could see Deirdre, Jack, Will, and George among the items on display. One hundred years after WWI, the characters brought me to the trenches in Europe.
I LOVED this book. This book was intriguing and very captivating. I loved that the author acknowledged what was fact and fiction in his acknowledgements. I read some pages over and over because I wanted to really relate with the characters, the time lines, and the actual history of World War I. We owe so much to those that went before us and had great suffering for our freedom! It must have been devastating to those boys who witnessed such great horror. May they rest in eternal peace!
What makes a book readable or memorable? I guess it is different from one reader to the next. This book, "None of Us the Same", will touch many.
Through the many voices the author, Jeffrey K. Walker, transports us through a terrible war and invites us into the characters lives afterwards. You will care about them, feel their sadness, resilience - respect and abiding love for each other.
I loved Uncle Johnny. You will wish you could meet him and stand by him at the sea cliff.
I cannot end without commenting on the beautiful description of an iceberg - it transported me to the sea.
I recently finished None of Us the Same and I cannot wait to read the next volume of Sweet Wine of Youth. It captured the emotion, intensity, and horrors of war but didn't lose sight of the eventual return home and the aftermath of war on the human psyche and its strain on human relationships. The characters were very well developed and the settings were perfect. Between this book and the new Broadway play "Come From Away," Newfoundland seems to be getting its day in the sun and a spot on my bucket list...and I already which book I'll be bringing with me.

Looking forward to volume 2!
Wow! Just finished reading "None of us the Same" and thoroughly enjoyed it. Newfoundland is now on my list of places I want to visit.

I liked the way the author switched between the main characters in the novel, Deirdra, Jack and Will which provided the reader with a different perspective and voice. I consider a story about wartime to be a masculine story so having Deirdre to lessen the impact was appreciated.

The author is a gifted storyteller which helped me clearly visualize the setting and briought the characters alive for me. I loved the witty dialog and banter along with the humor infused by the author.

I look forward to the 2nd book in the trilogy being published and I highly recommend this book. My father suffered from PTSD (we didn't understand it at the time) and Mr. Walker honors veterans by giving them a voice and reminded me that we owe so much to them.
I LOVED this book and feel like I learned so much while reading it. I really have such a new appreciation for Newfoundland (it's now on my bucket-list to visit), their light houses and icebergs, and though I have read about WWI and trench warfare before, this really brought so much more to light - the filth, the dreaded jobs, the gallows humor that gets people through it. I loved the character development blended in with incredible dialect wording. There is wonderful warmth of relationships and healing places pitted against the horrors and scars of an exceptionally ugly war, with a few "bad guys" thrown in for good measure. My book club read this and all loved it. The author will Skype in for book club meetings - just contact him. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the trilogy!
