I've stumbled on this book (Kindle version) by total accident while looking for cultural references and guidebooks on Tibet since I'm planing to trek there this summer. I'm usually not a fan of travel memoirs, but I nonetheless decided to read it as I wanted to see how another fellow backpacker like myself would attempt such an arduous journey...and I'm so glad I did! Debbie's storytelling is quite captivating and heartwarming. She slowly draws the reader into her adventures as well as opening up progressively about herself and her past, about her struggles as a Canadian expatriate in Beijing, about a harrowing relationship, giving us a glimpse of what prompted her to undertake this extraordinary trip through the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, that only a lucky few will ever get to experience firsthand. It's quite fascinating for a man to see and understand the world through the eyes of a woman and Debbie does a wonderful job at exposing her innermost fears, her voyage of self-discovery, personal growth and ultimately her entire healing process. Through candid images of temples, smiling monks and lavish landscapes, through accounts of altitude sickness and transportation logistical nightmares, through the unending suffering and persecution of the Tibetan people so well portrayed in her book, through the lush jungles of Laos and the architectural marvels of the Khmer, Debbie gradually leads us to the realization that each man must face and conquer his fears alone, that we are always blinded by the fog of uncertainty and doubt in the hardest of times and that, despite all odds, we are much stronger than we think and that personal effort can lead at times, as it did in her case, to spiritual rebirth. Debbie Wong's prose will instill hope and surely touch in many ways those who constantly seek understanding and have wanderlust, as well as those who are curious about the marvels of Tibet and the far reaches of the Asian continent. Her voice as a woman is strong and passionate as she reflects upon her life, and she has certainly captured my imagination with this book! Now all I have to do is follow her footsteps to the Everest base camp...Tags : The Same Sky: A Traveler's Quest for Redemption and Peace [Debbie Yee Lan Wong] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I couldn't put this book down, the author swept me along with her on a beautiful ride to self discovery. At times I had to remind myself that it is not fiction. The author's storytelling skills are masterful as well as her description of the places where she's travelled. I looked up the images of the places she described that I haven't been to ie.ta phrom, because her descriptions were so evocative, doing so helped place me even more firmly into the world that she was writing about. They way she shared about her painful break-up to find healing through her travels was also inspirational. I highly recommend this book!!
Recommend Debbie Wong's "The Same Sky" to anyone who has traveled or aspires to do so.Debbie's personal story and the stories of the people on her path are told across the backdrop of Asia. The stories are heart wrenching, uplifting and sometimes comical. The sights, sounds and smells of Asia flip by as easily as the pages. Makes me wish I had taken and kept a travel log when I had traveled along those very same roads. Anyone who has traveled knows the people you meet out there on the road are traveling for their own reason. Although everyone may live under the same sky, how we live, the choices we make are what makes each one of us unique.

This novel is an inspiring portrait of personal redemption and healing during a journey through Asia. The author makes the point quite clearly that regardless of our culture, background, or circumstances, we all face similar challenges our feelings get hurt, we are betrayed, we are mistreated, and yet we are still able to love, be kind, and to support one another. She seamlessly weaves in the significant historical details and engaging anecdotes about the countries she experiences including Laos, Cambodia, China, and Tibet amongst others. The author’s vibrant sense of humor and profound insights not only hold the story together, but make it a joy to read.
Debbie Yee Lan Wong’s graceful memoir, The Same Sky, chronicles her search for self-acceptance and peace as she travels through the South East Asian landscape, piecing her life together after a shattering break up. At once a vividly detailed travel memoir and a compelling story of love and loss, Wong’s writing at times feels like a work of fiction for the ways that her surroundings meaningfully propel and reflect her own emotional journey. However, this sense of a delicately crafted vision comes from Wong’s emotional skin, which has been rendered soft and sponge-like by a devastating betrayal, allowing the sights and people of South East Asia to travel through her existence, changing her shape and forcing her to grow as they pass. The result, as you might imagine, is moving. Strangers, locals, and fellow travelers drift in and out of Wong’s narration, and she handles their stories with the same generosity and understanding that she uses to paint her own story. The array of lovers and locals, sometimes sage and other times irritating, make this a richly peopled book, full of anger, forgiveness, love, and resentment. What remains constant through the dreamy, drifting tide of this vibrant memoir is the growing strength of an individual narrator, who shines all the more for her time in the darkness. If you want to make space in your heart, so another life can crawl in to inspire you, to challenge you, to warm you, or even just to nestle there, bright and tender, pick up Wong’s The Same Sky.
Great Travelogue! Fun to follow Debbie as she wanders her way through countries i'll probably never visit and faces the problems of life that we can all relate to. It's a fun read!
