Odin Shadow Sons of Odin Book 1 edition by Erin S Riley Romance eBooks

I've been staying up the last three nights reading this book. All I can say is I'm so glad I decided to read this story. Not quite sure what to expect, I admit I was curious where the story was going to go. This author didn't disappoint. The character development is fantastic and the story kept me on my toes. Many times I found myself yelling, "What a bastard!" Or "What's wrong with her?" I know to get those kinds of emotional responses out of me, the story definitely had grabbed me.

Let me just say my favorite characters were Ulfrik and her twin brother. I mean what's not to love about them? Both had beautiful souls, were givers, and protected her. I'm usually pretty good at figuring stories out, but I was not expecting certain events that occurred. I know now I have to read the sequels to find out what happened. Bravo to the author!

Odin Shadow Sons of Odin Book 1 edition by Erin S Riley Romance eBooks Reviews

Set in the 9th century A.D., in Ireland and Norway, the heroine, Selia, falls in love with a handsome, bodybuilder-type berserker. Selia is a strong-minded young woman with a husband as strong-minded and twice as large as she. Mix in some serious dysfunctional family issue as well as plenty of gore and you have quite the swashbuckling tale.
I rated this book 4 stars because despite the 9th century setting, the speech and interactions of the characters were modern day, which I found to be off-putting at times. However, the pace of action for the most part, kept me intrigued
The main characters are well developed and although mystery still surrounds Selia at the end, there is closure. I would be willing to read the next book in the series.
This book was acquired at no charge through The Fussy Librarian
Although it could be read as a romance, the story centers on the protagonist’s dilemma in making the right choice. Poor Selia is cursed by multiple spells, and one of them takes effect when she accidentally sets her eyes on her future husband, Alrik. From that moment on, her peaceful, although somewhat dull life changes. Aside from her overwhelming fascination for Alrik and his dangerous obsession for her, she also discovers many dark secrets that challenge her faith. She grows from an innocent girl who has no say in her own marriage into someone incredibly strong at the end. The author has the amazing skills and patience to entice her readers through a seemingly impossible journey and prove to them her story is unconventional and evocative. From time to time I felt like being under a spell, wanting impatiently to find out what would happen to Selia next. I am glad she is able to make her own choice and defends her choice with such fierceness. The happiness of the ending is hard to judge, as it isn’t up to us to judge others’ choices, especially when love is involved.
Firstly, I just want to say I fell in love with the way this author writes, her language, the descriptive expression she gave her characters. I was literally pumped reading this story, could not put it down. It was intense and then romantic and then nerve wrecking.
I enjoy reading about vikings, how their lives were so this book was definitely my cup of tea.
The characters were well written I must say. Very complex characters with secrets but they weren't hard to dicipher.
Selia is basically forced to marry a strikingly beautiful barbarian whom she sometimes is scared of and sometimes desires more than her heart could take it. Sometimes you want to hate Alrik and sometimes you feel sympathetic as to why he is the way he is. His brother Ulrik is less impulsive and thinks before he acts, however he may not be as innocent as Selia may think. They both form a friendship, which ignites a fire in Alrik. Selia's brother is also well written and plays an important part. Overall I really liked it and can't wait to read the other two in the series to see how the characters develop and who Selia ends up with. I'm rooting for Ulrik #teamulrik
When I first started reading this book, it reminded me of the old bodice-rippers I used to read when younger. You know, the young girl that falls prey to the dashing bad boy, pirate, or in this case, a Viking. This tale doesn’t have the sexual tension and heat of those types of stories that got us all hot and bothered. No, this story has substance, an actual plot and relatable characters. I fell in love with Selia, and felt her dilemma of being married off to a man old enough to be her grandfather. But, her father had his own reasons for making that type of match. Because, you see, Selia has a huge secret that no one must discover. Actually, Selia and her twin brother, Anniileas, are both big secrets. Their adoptive father, Naill, found them alongside a creek, beside a dead woman. Who was the woman? Were these her children? Where did they come from?

This story has so many hooks built into the storyline, if just kept me turning the pages. Especially when we get to know Alrik Ragnarson and his dark past. Will he repeat the mistakes of his father? As Selia comes to terms with her rash decision to marry Alrik, she found finds herself attracted to Ulfrik, her husband’s brother. When Alrik’s dark nature emerged, I found myself on a roller coaster about the man she should be with. I liked Ulfrik, but there was a hidden side to him too. What are his true motives for Selia and his brother? All the ugly truths are revealed at the Gathering, and I don’t blame Selia for running. Ultimately, I feel she made the right choice. Time will tell.

I really enjoyed the adventure Riley took me on, and I’m so glad it didn’t turn into a bodice-ripper. If you love historical romances set during the Viking era, you will love this book. I give it 5 feathers, and I can’t wait to read more of this series.
