solid, memorable characters who you'll either love right away or find yourself asking 'geez, cant someone just kill him/her already??'. yimt (for example) was a truly enjoyable presentation of a dwarf.. brave, heroic, funny, battle hardened ... and not at all the stuffy bore that Gotrex was from the Felix & Gotrex books. the premise of the story was solid. the execution well done. the ending was satisfying, and left me eager to read the next in the series. considering how much trouble i have getting enjoyment from reading due to being somewhat dyslexic, this is high praise. it isnt a perfect book, but in my opinion it's pretty darn close.

I thought that this was an excellent story, but I did have trouble keeping the names of some of the characters straight. I can't wait to read the second book that is coming out soon.
A Darkness Forged in Fire Book One of the Iron Elves by Chris Evans is a great read. Looking forward to the next one.
Ordered this almost totally on the cover art work- it had good reviews also so why not?
Found it a good read. It's hard to come up with a new take on fantasy and this is a fine effort.
Only complaint would be I like a bit more romance in my books ;o)
Buy it if you like Elizabeth Moon or Mercedes Lackey its more in that style. Going to order number two, hoping it's as good.
Not overly complex. A good read for enjoyment. Minimal sexual content good for teens and the non readers coming out of school today.
Indifference. That's the best way to describe this book. I didn't care for the characters, I didn't believe the story, the bad guys were either super-duper demons who were surprisingly easy to kill or trees - I'm not sure which. I bought book 2 at the same time as book 1 and I will have to be really bored to read it.
It was a bit confusing to get the whole picture, as all the races had their own world view. The elves, which most of the book is a about is even more confusing as there are multiple factions. I liked the book, but I feel as though he should have taken little bit more time to explain it, because of all the weird names, or write a series novella that would fit before this book to explain it better. This book follows a major in a battalion, and there is a battle, but it is not super graphic.
I chose this book after it was suggested to me by a friend, as a good read. In some ways, the storyline is intriguing. The MC was entertaining in his own way, and the side characters Yimt and his dwarf friend were extremely fun to read along with. And who can forget a drunk pelican? )

However, near the middle, the circumstances became slightly confusing, and the hinted-at romance never came to fruition, or at least some sort of recognition. It mostly faded away. My biggest irritation was two-fold; the end with the Star and the choice the MC makes. And, I was annoyed that the last few chapters--to me--read as if the author was setting up for the second book. Do that in the epilogue, and give me all the action and climax in the chapters themselves.
